What remains of utmost importance is that every person needs and values a good night\u2019s rest and therefor comfort and the feel against the skin is the winning element. Go with what\u00a0<em>feels<\/em>\u00a0right for you. With fine bed linens, it is generally true that you get what you pay for. Bed sheets with a high thread count cost more, but they will ultimately last longer than thinner sheets.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t pay to skimp on bedding, one should always look for the best quality you can afford.<\/p>\n<p>Some facts and terminology explained:<\/p>\n<p><em>What is thread count\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric\u00a0This number is based on the threads woven horizontally (\u201cweft\u201d) and vertically (\u201cwarp\u201d). \u00a0Cotton sheets are described by thread count, which literally means the number of threads in the cloth. Best affordable sheets are in the 200 range, while expensive sheets can go from 250 to way more than 300. The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable they are. A higher thread count is not necessarily better quality \u2013 200-thread count cotton sheet made of very fine yarns will feel softer than a 400-thread-count sheet made from poorer quality cotton of thicker yarns. A quality higher thread count sheet will feel much softer and silkier.<\/p>\n<p><em>How to judge for quality \u2013\u00a0<\/em>Fineness is key to quality. Hold up a sheet to the light to determine its quality. Light will not shine through a high thread count sheet. Also, high thread count sheets won\u2019t fuzz or pill. Scratch the sheet with your fingernail to see if any pill comes off. If so, it\u2019s a lesser-quality sheet.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cotton \u2013\u00a0<\/em>quality begins with the length of the staple. The longer the staple, the finer the yarn and softer, smoother and stronger the end product. Cotton is breathable, comfortable, long lasting and easy to launder. Very widely used for linen.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Egyptian cotton<\/em><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">\u00a0\u2013 grown in Egypt and has an exceptionally long staple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Polyester-cotton \u2013\u00a0<\/em>Cotton-polyester blends of 50% polyester and 50% cotton produce bed linen that\u2019s easy to launder and needs little to no ironing.<\/p>\n<p><em>Weaves<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Percale<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Percale is a type of plain weave \u2013 one thread over, one thread under \u2013 that allows air to pass through, giving it a lovely powdery coolness and breathability.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sateen\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 an elegant weave of four threads over, one thread under, which places more threads on the surface of the cloth to give a silky smooth feel and sheen. The distinctive weave traps air and holds in warmth so it\u2019s especially inviting in winter.
